Hypnotic FAQs & Facts
Hypnotic Facts
85% of all ailments which people seek a Doctor's advice with are psychosomatic, i.e., they originate in the mind and have no physical cause.
The first recorded case of hypnosis being used was in Ancient Egypt, where high priests made suggestions to their ill patients in Egyptian Sleep Temples. This practice began over 6000 years ago.
The term 'Mesmerism' originated with an Austrian Doctor named Franz Anton Mesmer (1734 - 1815) who used a technique called 'Animal Magnetism'.
This involved making magnetic passes over the patient's body with small natural magnets called 'lodestones' which Mesmer believed were pieces of the moon that had fallen to earth.
These passes were thought to have a curative effect on the patient, but it was later discovered that it was the suggestions given during this practice that produced the desired results.
Scottish Surgeon, James Braid (1790- 1860) coined the term 'Hypnosis' which comes from the word 'Hypnos', the Greek God of Sleep.
Braid meant this term to describe a sleep of the nervous system rather than actual sleep, but misunderstandings led to the popular myth that hypnosis is a sleep state, which is not the case.
