Experiment 2 Experiment 3

Experiment 3

Either print off the image below so that it fills an A4/Legal size piece of paper, or draw a similar image of a large circle crossed with two lines as shown.

You will also need a piece of string approximately 8 to 10 inches in length and a small weight. A house key or wedding band is ideal.

Now simply tie the weight to the end of the string, and you're ready!

Place the piece of paper on a table and sit comfortably so that you can easily extend your arm to reach over the paper without resting your elbow on the table.

It is important that your elbow is not resting on the table for this exercise to be successful.

Now hold the free end of the string between your thumb and forefinger and let the weight dangle an inch or two over the centre of the paper.

Do not consciously move your hand, arm or homemade pendulum. Just hold the pendulum steadily above the paper.

Now as you focus on the paper, follow the shape of the circle with your eyes in a clockwise direction. Then tell yourself that the pendulum is beginning to move to follow the line of the circle in a clockwise direction.

Again, do not attempt to move the pendulum voluntarily, just keep it held steadily and repeat to yourself that the pendulum will move in a clockwise direction.

Soon you will notice that the pendulum begins to move apparently of its own accord, slowly at first and then faster and in a wider arc as it follows the circle.

Once this happens, tell yourself that the pendulum will come to a stop. Wait and this will happen.

This all takes place while your arm, hand and fingers remain completely still. The pendulum seems to move of its own free will.

Once the pendulum stops, try willing it in the opposite direction and then horizontally and vertically across the centre lines one at a time.

You will find that this improves with practice and soon you will be able to control the speed, direction and arc of the pendulum's movements so that you can change direction instantly.

This experiment is known as Chevruel's Pendulum, named by it's French dicoverer and works on the principal of ideomotor signals.

These are imperceptible muscular movements which control the pendulum in this experiment.

This is an excellent example of how the mind affects the body.

Remember, the more you practice this test, the more proficient you will become.

You can also instruct a friend to hold the pendulum while you suggest which direction the pendulum is going to move in. You need to speak in a confident voice for this to work on others.

This is a very simple form of hypnosis as you are making suggestions to another person and they are accepting them to create the effect!
